"What's good for our people ends up being great for Hoar Construction," said Doug Eckert, who oversees human resources as vice president of operations for Hoar.

The three companies - all located within a mile of each other along Lakeshore Drive - were named Monday to a list of the nation's best places to work. They were among 50 recipients of the Society for Human Resource Management's "Best Small & Medium Companies to Work for in America" awards handed out Monday at a conference in Chicago.

The companies were selected by the Great Place to Work Institute in its ranking of the nation's top 25 small and 25 medium employers.

Hal Adler, president of the San Francisco-based Great Place to Work Institute, said Birmingham has built a reputation as a progressive business center.

"With an active and engaged business community, we were not surprised to see so many quality nominations from small and medium companies based there," he said.
