Government Work

The Professional album coverImage via Wikipedia

Apparently government doesn't work, at least not very efficiently. I guess that's why they call it an oxymoron when you use "government" and "work" in the same sentence.

Someone I know recently got a job working as a temp for the US fed government on a project that comes around every few years. I am going to be purposely vague in order to assure no hard feelings.

After one week of training, this person, a longtime engineer and professional manager is aghast at the inefficiency and lack of work ethic of his fellow team members. Here is how he describes government work:

  • No efficiency. It takes the crew of four almost an hour to get started in the morning.
  • No accountability. Even crew leaders tell the team members - "make the money, it's just temp work."
  • Poor work ethic
  • Poor quality
  • Poor planning
How can we Change this?
