Almost No Blog Weekend

I took the weekend off.

I got stuck in Vegas over night last week and was forced to skip a red-eye flight out of town last Thursday, taking a 6 AM flight out Friday morning after spending a paltry three hours tossing and turning in a bed at the Hooter's Casino which charged me $39.95 via Travelocity Concierge service from McCarran airport + a $5.00 "resort fee". Huh?

I got to the casino at midnight via airport shuttle and had to be downstairs to get back to the airport at 3:20 AM. The check-in kiosks at Delta aren't even turned on until 4:15 AM! Very little sleep on the flight to Atlanta, yadda yadda yadda. Home safe and sound.

Plenty of time to think about the things I heard and saw at the 2009 Employers of Excellence Conference, which was an outstanding conference that was woefully under-attended due to the economy. If you can go next year, I strongly encourage you to do so. The folks at HR.com did a great job providing a wide variety of content and perspective.

I also enjoyed the conference because it catered to strategic HR execs, not the typical generalist conference attendee you would find at SHRM. There was a different vibe and focus which I found refreshing and thought provoking.

I have already posted a few items from last week. I have a lot more stuff that requires some time and development to get ready to post. I will be doing that starting tomorrow.

Here are some of the things that I will be blogging about:

  • We are living and managing in turbulent times

  • We are making talent decisions without considering all the implications

  • Human Resources CAN be strategic (or not)

  • Brands matter in more ways than you think

  • We are what we type

  • The Truth is Out There

  • Zappos is the coolest place to work EVER. (more on my tour as well as pix and video to come!)

  • How to find out quickly about your company reputation

Meanwhile, stay tuned, and watch out for the clowns and the zombies!

Congratulations to the Pittsburgh Steelers on winning an unprecedented sixth Super Bowl championship, to the Arizona Cardinals for going way further than anyone ever expected, and to my adopted home town of Tampa for doing a great job hosting game!
