No Prayer, No Work

What the hell were they thinking? More than 100 Muslim workers were fired by JB Swift at a plant in Greeley, Colorado after a dispute between the workers and the company over a request religious accommodations during Ramadan resulted in a walkout.

It is understandable that the company would be upset with workers who walked off the job, but firing 100 Muslims, during Ramadan, on the day before 9/11?

According to The Greeley Tribune, at least 130 Muslim workers at the north Greeley JB Swift & Co. plant were fired Wednesday afternoon, apparently over a dispute involving breaks during Ramadan. See the full story here.

The Muslim workers had also requested that their evening break period be moved to an earlier time in order to allow them to eat sooner. Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset during Ramadan which means that these workers wanted to eat after fasting for something like 15.5 hours.

This does not strike me as an overwhelmingly brilliant or elegant solution to this problem. Grievances are currently being filed by the union representing the workers, and I suspect there will be EEOC charges as well.

It will be interesting to see how it turns out.
