LPGA in Plain English: "Never Mind"

As the Rosanne Rosannadanna character from Saturday Night Live was wont to say: "Never Mind!".  Today, the Ladies Professional Golf Association announced it has reversed the decision it recently announced that would required non-English speaking players to learn English by 2009, or face suspension.

The policy had generated a storm of bad publicity since it was announced last month.

LPGA Tour commissioner Carolyn Bivens, above, said she will have a revised plan by the end of the year that won't include suspensions, although fining non-English speakers remains an option.

After a bombardment of public protest, LPGA Tour commissioner Carolyn Bivens said Friday that the group would issue a revised policy by year's end that would not include suspensions.

The action came after some of the tour's own corporate sponsors, such as State Farm, asked the organization to review its policy.

"We have decided to rescind those penalty provisions," Bivens said in a statement. "After hearing the concerns, we believe there are other ways to achieve our shared objective of supporting and enhancing the business opportunities for every tour player."
