Human Resources EYE ON THE ELECTION

Some miscellaneous notes from the political world that could impact Human Resources professionals.

Mental Health Insurance

Congress passes legislation that would require health plans offering mental health coverage to provide the same benefits for mental illness as they do for other medical conditions. Voting 376-47 and 92-3, vote, Congress approves H.R. 6983, H.R. 6049 which amends ERISA and the Public Health Service Act to prohibit employer group health plans from adopting mental health treatment limitations, financial requirements, or out-of-network coverage limitations unless comparable limitations and requirements were adopted for medical and surgical benefits.

Ledbetter Fair Pay Act

Democrats in both houses express their support for legislation (H.R. 2831, S. 1843) that would effectively overturn the U.S. Supreme Court's Ledbetter decision that limits the time frame in which employees can bring pay discrimination claims under federal law.

The legislation would amend Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, the ADEA, the ADA, and the Rehabilitation Act to provide that the charge-filing periods--300 days in most states and 180 days in the few states that do not have a fair employment agency--would be triggered whenever an employee is affected by application of a discriminatory compensation decision or practice

Fair Labor Standards Act

The Wage and Hour Division of Department of Labor should step up enforcement of the nation's child labor laws, witnesses tell a House subcommittee.

Wall Street Bailout

Still on Hold after not passing the house. 24 votes short. Dow drops highest amount in a single day!

Wachovia bank crashed today and was sold to Citi. Who knows what is next????
