Almost time for the Dreaded Annual Performance Appraisal. Here's how to SPEED the process up!

S.P.E.E.D Performance Discussion Technique

Here is a template that I have developed along with training formats and matrix forms that will assist any organization, supervisor, or manager in making the dreaded performance appraisal process much more simple and efficient.

The S.P.E.E.D.* Discussion is a simple yet powerful ongoing process for goal setting and performance dialogue between a supervisor and employee that allows them to conduct short, highly productive conversation on an agreed upon time period. The S.P.E.E.D discussion can be used an additional support framework for existing appraisal processes, or as a stand alone process that is simple and quick to implement, while at the same time offering simplicity and scalability in scope to fit the needs of any organization.

S.P.E.E.D your way to higher performance with a simpler process!

S = Strategic Objectives, such as Margin, Sales, Customer Service, Dollars generated per hour worked

P = Performance involving and informal Discussion of the above subjects and any other areas of concern or relevance

E = Engagement in which Supervisor and employee discuss any issues of concern, assistance required, etc.

E = Encouragement gives the opportunity for manager to praise work well done & recognize accomplishments

D = Development Dialogue: including discussions on training & development needs and coaching opportunities. Discussion on performance shortfalls and identifying methods to correct issues. Review other areas of interest to career and talent development as appropriate

Ideally, the dialogue process should be done informally every couple of months with negotiation and revisions of specific goals/measurements mutually agreed to or revised as needed. When the time for the official appraisal comes, it is simple to transfer this document to the official format. S.P.E.E.D eliminates the need for massive preparation at a single time or year, and virtually eliminates the dread and angst that normally surround the annual appraisal period.
